Flying motorcycle project.
I’m Founder & CEO of a (stealth) AI startup in San Francisco. Previously co-founded ClearMotion, which makes road sensing software and active ride systems, now in mass production with global automakers and >$1B in sales bookings. I studied CS @ MIT with a focus on machine learning and cognitive science, and worked across humanoid robotics, brain-computer interfaces, and autonomous driving.
Work
Stealth
AI software for physical engineering
I believe we are on the cusp of a new era of abundance, powered by software that will help us engineer the built world.
ClearMotion
making cars “fly”
Road sensing software, reinforcement-learning-based chassis controls, and active suspension system for autos and autonomous vehicles. Built a 150-person technical team of engineers and PhD researchers spanning advanced control systems, AI, robotics, CFD, real-time software, systems engineering, power/digital electronics, materials science, mechanical engineering, and physics.
Raised $370M to bring the concept from prototype to production, closing >$1B in sales and building a supply chain & high-volume production facility.
Inventor on 134 patents and patents-pending spanning AI algorithms for robotic controls, cloud-based SLAM, autonomous driving, automotive mechatronics, brain-computer interfaces and advanced control software.
Inventions
Selected Projects
DARPA Grand Challenge
architecting the AI driver
Founded a DARPA Grand Challenge team to build one of the world’s first fully-autonomous vehicles. Finalist in the race, along with the founders of Waymo, Aurora, and Google X.
MBTA Crypto Research
Led a small research team that reverse-engineered and cracked the cryptographic security of Boston’s MBTA “T” fare collection system: magnetic and RFID cards. We built custom tooling end-to-end (Bitstir for magnetic-media forensics, a GNU Radio/USRP pipeline for RFID protocol capture, and an GPU-based brute-force framework) and demonstrated exploits that enabled arbitrary stored-value card creation and cloning. When our Professor Ron Rivest (inventor of MD5 hash, founder of RSA security) reached out to MBTA, they decided to call the FBI and file a federal lawsuit against us. We won, and set important precedent against overreach of the CFAA.
AI Tiki Bar
Robotic tiki bar uses Claude Sonnet and Elevenlabs to converse with customers and determine the perfect drink for their mood. The system then mixes the custom drink to their specification. Weekend hackathon project, debuted at an event for Jensen Huang.
OSS Telemedicine Platform
Sana is an open-source telemedicine software platform that allows field nurses to treat or triage patients using programmed workflows on a mobile device, supported by remote physicians. System also supports predictive decision support on radiology and diagnostics.
Dorm Automation System
MIDAS dorm room automation system. All custom software, hardware, and cloud control. One of the first five Youtube videos to achieve >1M views. Featured a one-push e-stop “party button.”
Flying Motorcycle
Human-rideable motorcycle drone. 60kW, 8 propellers, onboard avionics, 8 minutes runtime. Max airspeed 35 mph. Custom carbon fiber frame. Autopilot software built on Ardupilot stack, with custom vision and LIDAR software to hold position and height.
Giant 14-Segment Display
Human-sized 14-segment display receives an SMS text message over a cellular model and streams the text on the mechanical display board.
Various Woodworking & Metalcrafting Projects
Shown: Full Sprinter camper van buildout with rift cut European white oak cabinetry in the cabin, and NASA-inspired control panels in the cockpit. Other projects include cabinets, an Eames inspired modernist dog house, etc.
